IS DYSLEXIA A DISABILITY?

How many of us would refuse to assist someone in a
wheelchair if they asked for help? The chances are
nothing would be too much trouble, even to the point of
offending their sense of independence. So why is it a
chore or bore or even something to be ridiculed when a
dyslexic needs help? Do people think we find it amusing,
as adults, to need help filling in forms, or official
letters having to be checked before they can be sent.

Yes indeed we don't need help bathing or feeding
ourselves, or have trouble getting from A to B in the
sense of a lack of mobility. Yet in this world that
functions on communication, we who have to struggle with
all forms of written language are not considered
disabled or disadvantaged in any way. For anyone who
insists you or your child does not require assistance,
ask them this. How would you function in a world where
you can't easily write a cheque, follow instructions on
medication, machinery or games. Where you know exactly
what you would like to say, but the words just can't be
written. Or worst of all often have to explain to
strangers, sorry I can't do that I am dyslexic, with a
deep suspicion that they believe you are either stupid
or lazy.
