Dear British Dyslexics,

What is Multi-sensory learning and how do I found out
more about it.

Cheers

The question you pose is a difficult one to answer.
Multi-sensory learning was originally developed in
America and I haven't personally come across any
literature regarding this topic. I can tell you,
however, that the main tool we use in teaching children
are computers. Computers are by their very nature
multi-sensory as they require vision, touch, sound, body
posture, the movement of many muscles and the use of
co-ordination in order to operate them. Furthermore,
the images that are displayed on the screen are only
representations and therefore, many cognitive processes
and perceptual processes are used in order to make sense
of the information being displayed. We also use
multi-coloured three dimensional objects such as letters
and symbols, sand trays and other devices which allow
children to simultaneously use as many senses as
possible.

The Multi-sensory teaching system seems to work by
opening up more than one channel of communication
simultaneously to the brain. In essence, information
flowing from different senses into the brain reinforces
each other and this allows learning to take place
quickly and permanently.

Send us your postal address and I will send you what
written information I have free of charge.

If I can be of any further help please don't hesitate to
contact me.

Dear British Dyslexics,

Our son is 13 years old and is moving schools after a
year of being bullied. He will be in year 9 in
September. He needs all the help we can give him to
improve his reading and skills in order to further
support the move. He had private help up to the age of
11 which helped him move above the level of statementing
but he is still not happy to read, has poor concentration,
inaccurate reading and difficulty in some conversations.

He can sight read music well without knowing the names
of the notes but is let down in his exams when asked for
a scale etc by the name! if he were to be given the
first note he could do it easily!.

Thank you
J H
